Who’s Who in the Book of Mormon – Brad Ballard

I always get excited when I discover an LDS-themed children’s picture book that I can enjoy with my children, that teaches important gospel principles and yet is presented in a way they find entertaining. I was so pleased to learn about “Who’s Who in the Book of Mormon” by new author/illustrator Brad Ballard. As we open the book, we first note the cute illustrations. They aren’t elaborate, but they’re effective and well-done. I especially liked the sheep, which look like kernels of popcorn with legs. Each page contains a full-length flap which is folded out to reveal more of the … Continue reading

Young Men: “Give Heed Unto the Prophet’s Words”

In his talk “Give Heed Unto the Prophet’s Words” Elder Quentin L. Cook speaks to the priesthood session of conference. He opens his talk by sharing an account of how the firefighters fought the fires in Southern California last year. These brave men and women stood strong in the face of fast advancing flames, saving both lives and property. He points out that each of us will face times of crisis and danger, but that we need to respond appropriately. He points out that heeding the words of the prophets is one of the most important things we can do. … Continue reading

Senior Missionary Series: We’re Having a Senior Moment

Something very exciting is happening today. My mom is flying to England to serve a full-time mission for the Church. She’s a widow, so she’ll be teamed with another sister, and together they will seek out those who might be looking for the gospel. We’re so excited to send her off on this wonderful adventure and know that she’s going to have the time of her life. I’m also a little jealous – I’ve always wanted to go to England. She’s promised to take a lot of pictures for me. Many seniors, when they reach the point where their children … Continue reading

Young Men: “Do It Now”

In his talk “Do It Now” Elder Donald L Hallstrom speaks to the men of the church at the Priesthood session. He opens with the story of his son, who procrastinated a school assignment and as a result did not have a family recipe to turn in for the class cookbook. He ended up turning in a friend’s recipe that used a lot of alcohol. The family suffered embarrassment from the incident. Elder Hallstrom goes on to make the comparison to those of us who may be procrastinating committing completely to the gospel. He speaks of the importance of reading … Continue reading

Young Men: Activities and Interests

Every young man will have varying interests. It is important to recognize that not every young man in your ward is going to fit into the same mold. There will be young men that love basketball, and others who hate. There will be the boys that love camping and those that don’t. There will be young men that love video games, and those who don’t (well—maybe not that one!) My point is that it is important to recognize each individual in your group and give him a chance to shine. Here are five ways to do that. 1) It is … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Women of Righteousness”

In a devotional address given at BYU on March 13, 2001, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve addressed the role of women, and how God views them. This was a wonderful talk that I, as a stay-at-home mom, particularly took to heart. It is very uplifting and, as Elder Ballard stated, good for both women and men to read and ponder. He begins by quoting a letter sent to church headquarters from an LDS woman who felt as though she were living a lie. Despite a strong testimony of the gospel, she doubted her value beyond … Continue reading

Young Men: Video Game Party

One fun activity to consider planning for your Young Men is a video game night. This could be something that you work together for, everyone bringing their scriptures for a certain period of time or the troop passing off a certain number of merit badges. This could also be a camp out, but you would need to make sure that the guidelines are still being followed. This activity is a great way to reach out to those boys that really are not interested in scouting. Here are five ideas for making the activity successful 1) You need to set a … Continue reading

Young Men: Church Ball

In many areas there are wards and stake that still have the young men play basketball as a ward team. This can be a positive experience for some of the boys. However, it is too easy to have this become negative for others. It is important to realize that church ball is mainly to build friendships and to be a positive experience. Here are a few tips to make it a more positive experience. 1) Respect everyone’s choice whether they want to play or not. It is not fair to put undue pressure on boys that are not comfortable playing … Continue reading

New Church Website Is Up and Running

Have you been to the church’s website lately? The new website is up and running. I wrote about the beta version last summer. It has now officially changed. The new look is cleaner and the site operates more smoothly. One feature I really like is the way that the menus slide out so that you can directly where you want to in that category. For example under “Serving in the Church” you can go directly to Young Women, instead of going to a topic page and then clicking on Young Women. This will save time and make your search easier. … Continue reading

Top 10 Things You Don’t Want to Hear From Your Kids During Sacrament

The chapel is quiet. Every head is reverently bowed as men and women around you ponder the Savior’s atonement. Even the children seem to grasp the solemn nature of the divine gift from above. Then, suddenly, to your horror, your child makes an announcement that echoes through the silent room. Kids have a tendency to be oblivious to things that make their parents blush. They also seem to enjoy making the pronouncements in as a loud a voice as possible, particularly when everyone else can hear them. If you’re lucky, your kids won’t think to make one of these pronouncements: … Continue reading
